Travels: Zamboanga City Satti

Day 2 03.02.11

M planned to play golf very early, but woke up an hour late. We had breakfast at the hotel’s terrace. For breakfast, M ordered Satti. We originally planned to have this Zamboanguena breakfast fare at the pueblo, but yesterday’s events made the day’s schedule erratic. Satti, M said can only be found in Zamboanga. There were two popular stalls serving satti in Zamboanga City- Jimmy’s Satti Haus and Morning Sun along Pilar St. This is a breakfast fare and supply doesn’t last long until lunch time. Since M is playing golf in the morning, we cannot try the satti on Pilar Street. So, we didn’t have a choice but to try the satti at the hotel’s coffee shop.

The Lantaka’s version has three sticks of large chunks of beef barbeque on a stick (the satti at pilar st has 3 SMALL cuts of beef on a stick) sitting on a bowl of red-orange thick soup called hambal. The soup was very spicy. It comes with rice wrapped in coconut leaves called puso, cut into small triangles which you soak into the soup. It was so spicy, it woke up every cell in my body, much better than coffee. It didn’t go well with my brewed coffee, I had to order a glass of coke.
